The Mistress of Versailles

Description

This is the girl known only as The Mistress of Versailles.

She is only fifteen. Little is known about her, but she is rumoured to have been the reason for the downfall of Louis XVI of France, who was the husband of the infamous Marie Antoinette, executed on on 16 October 1793.

It was said that Louis XVI was the first French king in two hundred years not to have a royal mistress.
Well, they were wrong.

On April 19, 1770 Marie Antoinette and Louis-Auguste were married by proxy in the Augustine Church in Vienna. They did not consummate their marriage until August 1777.

The marriage that for some seven years was no marriage cannot be exaggerated as an essential cause of the defamation of the queen's character. Louis' long delay in consummating the marriage not only became a subject of grave concern for those interested in the continuity of the dynasty but forever fixed the image of the king and his wife in the public mind. Spied on incessantly within the chateau, the couple became the butt of all manner of ribald humor within and later without the court ... the very faithfulness, indeed the uxoriousness, of Louis XVI, which made him a cuckold and dolt in the public mind, placed Marie Antoinette in an even more vulnerable position. Lacking in virility, he was seen as unable to dominate his consort. Subject to her sway, his rule was corrupted by feminine Power.

Yet you may be surprised to know the real reason for Louis's hesitance in his marriage bed: The Mistress of Versailles. At such a young age, she was the succubus responsible for the downfall of the kingdom and the French Revolution.

A spineless dweeb, the king had fallen completely under her power. Her manipulation and hedonistic heartlessness forced the king to cater to her every whim, at any time.

Though Marie Antoinette was blamed for such ravenous spending which would throw France into unparalleled poverty and spark the French Revolution, she was, in fact, a scapegoat.
Louis would constantly buy lavish gifts to silence his mistress, always under the name of his wife as a cover. The latter never objected to the framing, having been constantly drugged by her husband. It would be said that she was a gambler and an alcoholic, but the truth is, she was always drugged to stupidity, and the only gambling ever done was by Louis, with her wife's life and his own reputation at stake.

Not surprisingly, when the shit hit the fan and the mob stormed the palace, no one believed him, and by that time, The Mistress of Versailles was long gone.

I really like this piece. The only thing I have with it, is that the bottom half of her almost looks cartoon-ish while the rest of her has that old fashioned photo look. (I keep thinking Bettie Page, but this would be way before her time.) Was the blouse's effect intentional?

Even if it was, it's still a very well done piece and yet again, you never cease to amaze me. Good job hun!
